monit + exim4 = failure?

    Has anyone here gotten monit to successfully send mail through exim4 on 
the localhost?  Looks like monit is doing something dumb that Exim is 
rejecting it on.

    Here's what Exim had to say about Monit's connections:
2004-12-17 04:11:04 unexpected disconnection while reading SMTP command from 
(potmos.dmiyu.org) [72.9.228.229]
2004-12-17 04:11:40 unexpected disconnection while reading SMTP command from 
(potmos.dmiyu.org) [72.9.228.229]

    And here's what Monit had to say about the same connections.  Note the 
time difference:
Dec 17 04:10:49 potmos monit[31036]: Sendmail: error receiving data from the 
mailserver 'smtp.dmiyu.org' -- Resource temporarily unavailable
Dec 17 04:11:25 potmos monit[1185]: Sendmail: error receiving data from the 
mailserver 'smtp.dmiyu.org' -- Resource temporarily unavailable
