Precicely. I don't really see what the problem is - a 64x64 icon is
still 64x64 even if the monitor's aspect ratio is different.
I spent a lot of time trying to work out why fonts looked rubbish once
and it was because I'd inadvertently set the resolution to 1280x960
instead of 1280x1024 - my TFT doesn't handle non-native resolutions so
well.
Having 1280x1024 also means that if you have a large window (such as a
terminal server client or VNC client) you can have it at 1280x960 and
still have room for some window manager stuff - a toolbar or decorations
etc.
