make-kpkg initrd and modules

I have just used make-kpkg to build the pristine source of 2.6.9 into a debian
kernel.

I copied the .config file from kernel-image-2.6.9-1-k7 (its installed
in /boot/config-2.6.9-1-k7) and then issued the following command

MAKEFLAGS="CC=gcc-2.95" make-kpkg --rootcmd fakeroot --initrd --revision 1 \
--append-to-version akc kernel_image

I install the resultant .deb

When this kernel is booted I get a load of messages on the console about
modules that can't be freed because the device or resource is busy, and when
I do an lsmod I get the following

alan@kanger ~ $ lsmod
Module                  Size  Used by
... lots of normal modules then ...

How are these modules getting stuck - what do I do to get rid of them?
