I got this:

733249 496 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 500480 Sep 28 07:09 /usr/X11R6/lib/libGLU.so.1.3 733038 656 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 666440 Sep 28 07:09 /usr/X11R6/lib/libGLU.a

Now I checked those against what is on CD#1 of Sarge and they are the same.
What do you mean by "today's date"?

if you installed nvidia's driver from nvidia ( nvidia-*6111* ) than you might find libglut* in other places ( /usr/lib ) besides in
addition to the default sarge install at /usr/X11R6/lib

btw... libGLU is NOT the same as libglut (which is needed for glx/openGL)

Right. So I installed libglut, but with the nv driver I still get:

Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual

when running glxgears. And the GLX extension points to nvidia.6111.
