First off why are people suddenly crossposting to debian-devel all the
time? This is clearly something that belongs on debian-user. I'm still
CC'ing them to not break the thread though.
In any case I think the problem is probably caused by your mouse
driver not being loaded. Or at least because the mousedev (which is a
module in the debian kernels if I recall well) not being loaded (would
be more logical since hotplug and discover wouldn't load such a
thing).
So try:
modprobe mousedev
and then start X.
