I don't think so:
john@legolas:~$ hostname -f
legolas
john@legolas:~$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
search fjellstad.intern
nameserver 192.168.1.1

But then I have
john@legolas:~$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1       legolas localhost

and
john@legolas:~$ cat /etc/hostname
legolas
