You probably need mass storage support in your kernel. If it doesn't
get loaded automatically and you're using a stock debian kernel you
could either install hotplug or load it manually (modprobing it) cause
it's likely to be a module. I'm not sure about the name, just look
around in /lib/modules/<yourversion>
