We have had issues from time to time with ssh dying on only one of our
machines, doing a rebuild is not an option until we decide to rebuild a new
machine that this server is providing services on.

Try this, and then restart sshd;

 rm -f /dev/null 
 mknod -m 666 /dev/null c 1 3
