Well, I dropped mine in /usr/local/etc/init.d and made a symlink to
that in the /etc/rc?.d directory I wanted the script to run from.  In
fact, I do this for any local boot time configuration I want to add. 
It seems to work well and not get in the way of the Debian scripts.
