Tried to setup Samba 3.0.4-5 on Sarge as a PDC. Tried very hard to read
the docs and sample configure to no success. When connecting a W2k
client, I get this error:

"... Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password."

From the samba log file, I found this:

[2004/07/27 03:42:44, 0] lib/util_sock.c:get_peer_addr(978)
 getpeername failed. Error was Transport endpoint is not connected
[2004/07/27 03:42:44, 0] lib/util_sock.c:write_socket_data(413)
 write_socket_data: write failure. Error = Connection reset by peer
[2004/07/27 03:42:44, 0] lib/util_sock.c:write_socket(438)
 write_socket: Error writing 4 bytes to socket 22: ERRNO = Connection
reset by peer
[2004/07/27 03:42:44, 0] lib/util_sock.c:send_smb(630)
 Error writing 4 bytes to client. -1. (Connection reset by peer)

I googled the error message and did not find anything helpful. Please help

Here is the smb.conf:

[global]
       workgroup = WORKGROUP
       server string = %h server (Samba %v)
       obey pam restrictions = Yes
       smb passwd file = /var/lib/samba/passdb.tdb
       passdb backend = tdbsam, guest
       passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u
       passwd chat = *Enter\snew\sUNIX\spassword:* %n\n
*Retype\snew\sUNIX\spassword:* %n\n .
       syslog = 0
       log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
       max log size = 1000
       dns proxy = No
       ldap ssl = no
       panic action = /usr/share/samba/panic-action %d
       invalid users = root
       browseable = yes

try commenting the "invalid users = root" line and try.
might be that help.

Thank you very much for your suggestion. Unfortunately it does not help.

By the way, what is the "DOMAIN" name for the Windows clients? There is not "DOMAIN" name parameter in the samba configure file. Only the WORKGROUP!

Clement
