Sarge_Install : Partition_Concern
Greetings ....
Using a 5 year old 250 MHz Compaq Presario desktop
with 192 MB of memory and 2 hard drives, I've been
experimenting for a couple of months with a hard-disk
installation of Knoppix and now would like to move on up
to Debian Sarge ....
Knoppix runs well on this machine and seems much more stable
than the Win98_SE system that I've been running on it
for the past 5 years, but trying to apt-get install/update
the Knoppix packages has been somewhat problematic ....
Before the Knoppix HDD install, I did a Debian Woody install
on this machine which included LILO installation to the MBR
and allowed dual booting with Win98SE and Linux,
but ended up shifting drive letters under Windows
for the FAT32 partitions on /dev/hdb ....
However, I'm not sure that the primary/extended partition
settings at that time were the same as those that I'm using
now ....
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 524 4208998+ b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hdb1 2 3736 30001387+ f Win95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/hdb5 2 192 1534176 b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hdb6 193 383 1534176 b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hdb7 384 574 1534176 b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hdb8 575 855 2257101 b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hdb9 856 1136 2257101 b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hdb10 1137 1544 3277228+ b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hdb11 1545 1825 2257101 b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hdb12 1826 2106 2257101 b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hdb13 2107 2514 3277228+ b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hdb14 2515 2833 2562336 83 Linux
/dev/hdb15 2834 2935 819283+ 82 Linux swap
/dev/hdb16 2936 3215 2249068+ 83 Linux
/dev/hdb17 3216 3406 1534176 83 Linux
/dev/hdb18 3407 3584 1429753+ 83 Linux
/dev/hdb19 3585 3736 1220908+ 83 Linux
The only concern I have about beginning the Sarge install
is ....
Using the above partitioning scheme,
will I have to worry about *drive_letter_drift*
in Windows resulting from installing
one of the boot loaders to the MBR ????
I currently boot the Knoppix HDD install
from a floppy disk and Win98_SE without it,
and that wouldn't be a problem with the Sarge install
either, but dual booting using a boot manager
would be cool-er ....
Since I've only done one other pure Debian install,
I can't remember if there is an option to skip
the boot loader installation ....
