I had simmilar problems with several soundcards and 2.6 kernels.  But
loading the prime soundcard specific module before hotplug does its
dance seemed to miracilous cure it.  I have'nt found the time yet to
investigate this, so for the time being I just added "snd-cmpci" to
/etc/modules to get my daily doses of internet radio.
