Apt-get hangs

I have some additional information to add to my previously reported problem which is
that "apt-get install whatever" often hangs. I have now experienced this problem on
three different computers and it makes upgrading packages nearly impossible so I
must find a solution.

I believe the problem is linked to several factors: All the machines are smp
athlon, larger packages have a much, much greater probability of hanging, and the
hang usually occurs while unpacking. Some of the packages such as tetex and
syslinux took 4-5 hours of killing dead processes and reattempting to install.
Very, very painful! The problem exists with both stable and testing versions. My
lastest experiment was to boot into a single cpu kernel and in limited testing, the
problem seems to go away, but this is not a practical solution for me.

Has anyone else under similar conditions as above had this problem? Does anyone
know of any possible solution, or means to debug? All suggestions welcome!

Thanks,
David
