Well, you _should_ be able to go to a text console by typing
CTRL+ALT+F1
(F1 to F6 should all work). Then login as root and you can do something
like:
aptitude remove gdm && aptitude install xdm
I don't know what your actual problem is though. Perhaps gnome-session
is not installed (if there is such a package)??
