Since my prior posting directly above, I've now installed xplanet
(alongside xscreensaver on my Sid box).  

Using -vroot as an option doesn't make xplanet show up in
xscreensaver-demo.  It's still greyed out.  So to get it to show up, go
to your $HOME/.xscreensaver file, and look for the entry for .xplanet
(in mine it was around line 233).  You'll find that there's an entry for
xplanetbg.  Simple edit this to xplanet (drop the bg) and you'll have
xplanet in xscreensaver.

Now if I could just figure out all of the options in xplanet.  Wow,
quite a few.
