Interesting article. I was always under the impression that zImage is
gzip and bzImage bzip2, but clearly this is not the case.

In terms of size, either of those would be smaller than a
non-compressed alternative, but must be decompressed at boot time. If
you can manage it, try to have a lean enough kernel so that you don't
need to compress it at all; this will give you shorter boot times.
