When you log in to a console (Or via telnet, rlogin, ssh, etc.) you are just running a login shell, but X is not a shell. Now if you where saying that there should a mechanism for setting environment variable at a user level that was independent of the method of login then I would agree but ~/.profile ~/.bash_profile or ~/.login is not the place for these as they are used already and have well-defined jobs -- OoberMick Bart: Who's gonna play Radioactive Man?
