Check out that you have the right partition type enabled in Advanced partion types, it's a bit hidden in the options tree. (under xconfig filesystem->partition types->advanced partition types->pc bios)

For a pc type, it would be the
MSDOS_PARTITION
option. It's absolutely necessary for the kernel to recognize your root filesystem, and it's not enabled by default in the 2.6.* config file

The root filesystem is the ext2 filesystem and it is
build in the kernel. I use xconfig to configure and I
clearly remembers that infront of EXT2 there was tick
sign instead of dot.
