That is already the case, here is my search order:

            /usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/,

            /usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/,
            /usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/,
            /usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic/,
            /usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/

Changing the order does not seem to help (at least it doesn't improve 
things). On a different machine with almost identical setup, the fonts are 
fine (same search order).
