The real reason is this:
SOMETHING changed the perms in /var/*
they should be :
drwxrwsr-x 2 root staff 4096 2000-05-27 14:55 local
drwxrwxrwt 3 root root 4096 2004-06-03 00:58 lock
drwxrwxrwt 4 root root 4096 2004-06-09 20:14 tmp
I was getting similar problems, tracked it down to the perms in /var
being different from these. Maybe I should submit a bug report on this.
