In theory, yes. I recently did something similar with the debianized 2.4.26
sources and it worked out fine.

I'd say the Debian style initrd maker thingie (*) probably takes care of that
somehow, though I don't have any experience with RAID. I have noticed that
it tries to load several completely useless modules at every boot, and I'd
wager RAID stuff is probably in there. Seems to be an all things to all
people solution.

I did find that reconfiguring the kernel to avoid the initrd was a bit of
work. So much work that I gave up after three botched attempts, and finally
decided to just to live with the initrd and all the superfluous crap it tries
to load.

(*) I'm not sure what the mechanism is. A debianized makeinitrd script
maybe. I haven't looked. I've been building kernels with make-kpkg and
passing in an --initrd-something-or-other option to get it to do its magical
bit.
