What does "uname -r say?

If "2.4.x":

    add "hdc=scsi hdd=scsi" to your /etc/lilo.conf kernel options

          append="hdc=scsi hdd=scsi"

If "2.6.x":

    You should already be there. "cdrecord --scanbus dev=atapi"

Search the archives at lists.debian.org for more info. This comes up
a lot. Finally, there's lots of ways to burn CDs; cdrecord from the
command line, and a dog's breakfast of GUI apps that are front ends
for cdrecord.
