dpkg return "directory not empty so not removed" -- now what?

When dpkg return that a particular directory was not empty and so was removed, but is to be done with that offending directory? As an example, what should I do in this case:

The following packages will be REMOVED:
  mozilla-tabextensions*
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  mozilla-xft
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 1 to remove and 1 not upgraded.
Need to get 199kB of archives.
After unpacking 198kB of additional disk space will be used.
