xserver-xfree86 fiasco!

Hi list,
after a recent dist-upgrade, there was some kind of installation error
which I tried to fix. After various attempts, I made things worse and
now I can not install xserver-xfree86.
This is the installation messages:
--------------------------------------
apt-get install xserver-xfree86

The following NEW packages will be installed:
  xserver-xfree86
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B/5449kB of archives.
After unpacking 15.2MB of additional disk space will be used.

-------------------------------
It could be debconf, apt-get, dpkg, the package or some other thing.
Any hints or guesses?
