Hmm, sounds like it might be worth cleaning the lens... forget about
those CDs with carbon fibre tufts on, they're useless. You will
unfortunately need to take the drive apart and clean it by hand, using
a cotton bud thoroughly soaked (dripping) in isopropyl alcohol, very
gently.
