Tried both, no improvement.  It appears to play the file, but
can't get any sound out of my speakers (other than the background hiss). However point to be
noted is, there was no .libao in my homefolder. 

Also when i create ~/.libao, mpg123 also appears to play mp3s but no sound comes out of the speaker.
