I wasn't the one initiating the cross-post. Don't shoot me.

also sprach Antony Gelberg <antony@antgel.co.uk> [2004.04.08.0155 +0200]:

Just to throw some weight behind this, this solution has worked
for me on several Athlon / nForce servers I've built. I just
removed APIC from the kernel completely.

How? In 2.6 kernels I can't find an option...

also sprach Paul Johnson <baloo@ursine.ca> [2004.04.08.0244 +0200]:

That's why you should run from the battery until it runs down at least
once a week or so

I believe this is wrong. Lithium-Ion Batteries actually suffer from
complete discharge cycles.

or remove the battery entirely in a half-charge state and store it
(just remember to charge it back up before using again).

Yes, this is the best way.

also sprach Katipo <katipo@weavers-web.org> [2004.04.08.0332 +0200]:

and that only briefly for things such as a monitor install.

Why do you need to take a machine down for a monitor install? Do you
take it down when you change the network cable too?

also sprach Henrique de Moraes Holschuh <hmh@debian.org> [2004.04.08.0630 +0200]:

Anything that gets the processor to "keep itself cool" while going
from idle to almost-full-power as a crazed rabbit will fuck the
entire system much sooner, and reduce the stability too.

What? So cooling is bad?

No. It is a machine totally dead, CPU won't even NMI, soundboard
will keep looping whatever is in its buffer kind of bug. Probably
a northbridge issue.

What's NMI?

Try to make sure you don't have external PCI cards sharing IRQs
with the internal devices, and see if that improve things.

If only I'd know how to assign IRQs. Ever since they don't give us
jumpers for that anymore, I have been a software junky and my
knowledge about hardware has decreased logarithmically.

Enable the LAPIC NMI watchdog, and see if that causes better (or
worse behaviour). Try it with the IOAPIC NMI watchdog as well.

Do I have to patch that into 2.6.5?

But really, before you do *anything*, get memtest86+ and do
a 24-hour burn-in test in the "extended" mode.

Okay.

I am having no luck getting sound to work. I have a ASUS A7N8X
motherboard with the NVIDIA nForce2 chipset. I am running the 2.6.3
kernel on sarge.

I am getting no sound at all. If I play a .wav file using aplay, it
pauses for a few seconds and then returns to a command prompt.

I have tried different cables and speakers with no luck.

Any help would be appreciated!

Can u get sounds when logged on as root? If so, then it is most likely a
'permissions' problem.
Otherwise I suggest you run xmms in a terminal and try to play something.
Look at the error written in the terminal.
Good luck!

You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:

Hi there,

With two systems, one very new and one ancient system, both running
2.6.x, I am experiencing a weird Alsa-related problem. Also is
running and the modules are properly loaded. The kernel logs
successful initialisation of the modules, and that it found the
respective soundcards, and when I play sound, it seems that all is
working. There are no errors, xmms plays just fine via tha Alsa
output device.

However, there is no sound. I have used alsamixer and pushed every
channel to 100% volume, but there is not a single tone that emerges
from the speakers, connected to Line Out.

I am puzzled. What can be the cause of this?

Thanks,

I tried to get the onboard CS chip working, the kernel recognised it and
all seemed well, but no sound.

I then installed a cheap soundblaster card

Have you tried a 2.6.x kernel? It is designed to work with ALSA.

I should have said this in my first reply. It's common knowedge that AMD
based systems has, compared to Intel based systems, a reputation of
sometimes being unstable. No one ever bothers to explain why.

The same sources as above (hearsay alarm!) suggested not actually the
CPU as a reason, but rather the policy regarding boards.

That was exactly my point. The fact that there are AMD based machines out there that run stably under heavy load for months on end, means that the chips must be OK.

My machine at home is a 2400+ AthlonXP which runs on a VIA KT133A chipset - which I wouldn't describe as the best chipset ever for Athlons. BUT: It's a Gigabyte board, which I would like to believe is good product. I've had it for a year and a half. It runs Setiathome, acts as a gateway and mailserver, squid proxy and a host of other things that puts strain on resources. I've only ever had to restart this machine when I added hardware, it's never been unstable for a second.
