modprobe mousedev
modprobe usbmouse
apt-get install gpm
device = /dev/input/mice
protocol = imps2
See if that gets you a mouse cursor in your console.
If you get a cursor then alter your XF86Config file to reflect. Then apt-get remove gpm.
