You may also find that your monitor can drive undocumented resolutions with modified modelines. I pushed my ViewSonic A90f+ to 1280x960@75Hz with: Modeline "1280x960@75" 142.76 1280 1312 1848 1880 960 978 990 1009 ...mostly by using a modeline generator ('modeline' package for Debian) and tweaking the derived result until my monitor displayed at that resolution.
