Got it from the knoppix CD and the network is working again.
I am no longer getting the "deconfiguring" message/task on shutdown, however, 
and if-down is still reporting several attempts at a ppp1 interface which 
does not exist. These attempts are at the start of (or before) the shutdown 
sequence.
