How is your sasl config set up in imapd.conf?

I have:

 sasl_pwcheck_method: saslauthd
 sasl_auto_transition: no

Then in /etc/default/saslauthd, I have

 START=yes
 MECHANISMS=shadow

After changing /etc/default/saslauthd, make sure you (re)start it.
