I've been using s3virge on my woody machine perfectly fine.
What Woody kernel are you using ? 2.2 or 2.4 ? I use 2.4.
Some of the steps I did were:
dpkg-reconfig xserver-xfree86
selected s3virge as the driver for X with 16bpp @ 1024 * 768 res.
That's it, it worked fine.
