FYI: on my system
osamu@dambo:/$ sudo du -sh lib boot etc tmp var

164M    lib
21M     boot
42M     etc
52K     tmp
2.6G    var

Hmmm... with few kernels this may be too small...

Do you intsall non-debian program for local use?

If you are new to debian, keep it simple.  In stall into single
partition.  get used to it.
