Well, I'm using a 8500LE (Hercules) graphics adapter. As this is supported in
4.1.0 without any trouble, I find it hard to belive the 7500 is not
supported. According to dri homepage, the 7500 is also working with their
drivers, so it should be possible to get even accelerated X (I do so with my
8500).
Related to the current problem, it would have been nice to have heard whether
or not the suggestion of commenting out the PCI ID option had a positive
effect. Right now, I assume that tip either didn't make it to the questioner
or had no effect (which would be rather strange...). At least a different
error message would be helpful.
This asside, there's a not so elegant way to steer around this problem. Using
the commercial ati drivers, available at www.ati.com. From my experience, I
would suggest to use them as a last resort, the discussion on /. seemed to
indicate, this new version suffers from some ugly bugs, but You should get at
least a picture.

This is not correct. I don't remeber what the radeon driver was made for, I
assume it was the original radeon in X 4.0. In woody (again with the 8500)
the relevant driver is "ati". I've attached my XF86Config, this one is
working right now (and working greatly in conjunction with the dri hardware
acceleration).
