kernel 2.6.3, emu10k1, no sound

Can anyone shed some light here? I compiled alsa in the kernel (y, not
as m), with emu10k1 (I have a sound blaster). Now I get the following:

Couldn't open mixer device /dev/sound/mixer
(from the gnome applett)
and from the volume control:
Unable to open audio device '/dev/mixer'.
Please check that you have permissions to open '/dev/mixer'
and that you have sound support in your kernel.
 However:
tony@hpd:~$ ls -l /dev/dsp
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     audio           9 2003-10-08 15:58 /dev/dsp -> /dev/dsp0
tony@hpd:~$ ls -l /dev/mixer
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     audio          11 2003-10-08 15:58 /dev/mixer -> /dev/mixer0

Any ideas would be welcome.
