try

cdrecord dev=ATAPI: --scanbus

you will probably end up with something like

cdrecord dev=ATAPI:X.Y.0 --scanbus

you can use ATA instead of ATAPI, they somehow use different libraries. to
find out about all possible interfaces, use

cdrecord dev=HELP:
