Just use newer kernel than 2.4.18. Newest is 2.4.25, Debian has 2.4.24 in 
sarge and AFAIK knoppix have 2.4.23. If you are pure woody user, then 
download it from kernel.org and compile usual way, otherwise do 

# apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.24-1-386

where you can use 686, k6 or k7 instead of 386.
