RealPlayer 8/9 Plugins in Linux -- Instructions

Dear friends:

Here is the lowdown on the whole RealPlayer issue:

The latest version of RealPlayer, RealOne that is currently used with Linux is
RealOne Alpha. It has remained an alpha for two years and is essentially
dead. That is why many of its features do not work or work imperfectly. And
that is why the RealOne plugins do NOT work anywhere. Doing a little research
on the subject online, I found out why.

The latest RealPlayer Gold version is RealPlayer 8, which works great. And
when you install the latest RealPlayer 9 codecs and plugins for it, you get
naturally RealPlayer 9, which plays all plugins on the Net in Mozilla: The
name of the file is:

rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2.bin

You can find it at the RealPlayer Unix Community Page at:

Download Instructions
http://forms.real.com/real/player/unix/unix.html

(Be sure to select the Linux2x.libc6i386, NOT the libc6i386 RPM)

Installation Instructions:
http://forms.real.com/real/player/unix/unix.html

Now, first UNINSTALL whatever RealPlayer you already have on your system, that
is, most likely the RealONE.

Now, install RealPlayer8 in your home directory as user by first making it an
executable and then installing it:

$/home/user/chmod u+x rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2.bin

And then:

$./rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2.bin

After installation of RealPlayer8 (which is in your home directory), download
the RealPlayer9 codecs and plugins from:

http://realforum.real.com/cgi-bin/unixplayer/
showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=announcements&Number=3128&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5

Look for the RealPlayer 9 codecs/plugins in the top section of the page as
follows:

* Linux i386 (~795kb d/l):
http://docs.real.com/docs/playerpatch/unix/rv9_libc6_i386_cs2.tgz

Download, read the Readme file, extract the contents using the Right-click
context menu command "Extract" in your Xandros File Manager, then add the
codecs and plugins as instructed to the /home/user/RealPlayer8 Codecs and
Plugins directories:

sher@Dell:~$ cd RealPlayer8
sher@Dell:~/RealPlayer8$ ls

I would simply copy all of the Codecs in the RV9 package into /home/user/
RealPlayer8/Codecs/ directory and all of the Plugins into the /home/sher/
RealPlayer8/Plugins directory.

One last critical step:

Copy the "rpnp.so" file from the /home/user/RealPlayer8 directory to the "/
usr/mozilla/plugins" directory. Don't forget. That's it. It should now work.

I think you will really like the RealPlayer 8/9 with its plugins. Now try the
plugins by first checking Mozilla. You should see the rpnp.so plugin listed
in Mozilla Help, About Plugins.

Now try your new RealPlayer 8/9 plugins by playing the movie trailers at:

http://www.hollywood.com

These videos WILL WORK! Both video and audio should be fine. But be sure to
try one of the older videos. The more recent videos are overloaded and often
not accessible due to demand.

Or, better yet, try the news videos from CBS News at:

http://www.cbsnews.com

Be sure to select RealPlayer in your preferences. Provided you have broadband,
the video/audio looks great and at a comfortable size screen box size.

Or try any of the videos from The Feeding Room at:
http://wgntv.feedroom.com/x/tiles.jsp

Finally, you can also play the videos from Reuters:

A final exciting note about the new Helix RealPlayer 10:

https://player.helixcommunity.org/

The new Helix RealPlayer 10 is already out in alpha form. It has a lot of
problems. It is NOT yet ready for prime time, but it soon will be. That
should really make everybody happy. Meanwhile, stick with RealPlayer 8/9.

Enjoy!

Benjamin
