decompress install error

I'll try to make this a general install question.
I'm trying to decompress/install with the following command:

tar -xzf tmda-cgi-0.12.tgz   (as root)

Error Message:
"tar: tmda-cgi-0.12/htdocs/display/dyn_buttons/subtopic9.png: Cannot
change ownership to uid 102725, gid 100: Invalid argument"
************************

This error message repeats many times for different files.

Could anybody offer a clue what could be going on here?
