Unable to get past kernel boot



I have just cross installed an old redhat server I have at a colo with debian using debootstrap etc. but keeping the old kernel.

All went well and things looked good until I rebooted and couldn't get into contact with the server.

Having gone into safe mode which boots a small distro from ramdisk (thankyou 1and1 hosting) I looked at my syslog (sorry for long cut and paste):

then nothing...and I can't even ping it from the network.

Where am I going wrong?
If the kernel boots and the fs mounts, then surely init shoud kick in and start everything else?
Why does cron start and nothing else?
