Hi,

I'm doing my first linux install, on an Acer TravelMate 530, and everything
went well until configuring XFree86.

I've tried specifying i810 drivers and just plain old vga drivers and when I
try to launch xinit I always get the "no screens" error.

I've downloaded drivers from intel, but the install for them fails because
it can't find the headers for the bf2.4 kernel.

I'm a newbie myself, but I think:

% uname -a to find the exact name of your kernel,
% apt-cache seach kernel to find out which kernel header packages are avaliable, choose the one that exactly matches your kernel
% apt-get install kernel-headers<whatever> to install the headers

How should I solve this problem?
Should I be able to sort this out by running some config utility and
providing the correct info, or does the intel driver need to be installed?

Try xconfig to set up x. Plain vesa drivers might do, but it's better to have the ones for your hardware. You prob wantot have hardware specs nearby, otherwise you can manually edit /etc/XF86Config-4
