Looks like you need to configure XMMS to use ESD:
If ESD is running, nothing else is able to directly access the audio dev, and you must reroute trough ESD.
If XMMS works without ESD (or any other mixer), then it is directly accesing the audio dev (and nothing else should be able to).
XMMS has the apropiate output plug-in, just select it in its preferences.
