Knoppix is not a real OS, it is just to put in your CD and use it, I
wouldn't consider it as a real day to day use OS (OK, you can install
it via some partialy working script blah blah...)
I don't like Xandros, because they are far from the free sofware
community. Besides, they have had some critical security bugs during
their short life. Besides, writing a new file manager from scratch is
not an inituative idea these days. I mean c'mon, this is not 1997, we
now have konqueror and natilus, who beat the shit out of windoze
explorer.
I my self, if I want to recommend a distro to my buddy and if he is to
install it himself, I would reccommend Libranet. But since this time
you are going to install the OS (Which means I assume you know how to
do it), then Libranet loses it's advantages. I guess Debian is the one
for you. ofcourse, if I were you, I would upgrade KDE to 3.1, or if you
use Gnome, upgrade it to 2.2, after installing sarge.
My parents (kind of people who can hardly operate a microwave) have been
using Woody with KDE 3.1 with great success, for the last 6 months.
They only use 5 applications, KMail, Konqueror, Kuickshow, Noatun and
kit and their system has never crashed. Of course, they even do not
know the application's name, because I renamed them to mail, web,
picture ...
;-)
