new kernel >>> can't boot into debian

Hi,
I just finished following a tutorial to kompile a 2.4.20 kernel in debian, and it asked me to make a boot disk, so I did, it also asked me something about lilo, I said no. Now when I reboot lilo comes up, when I choose debian not much happens (even though the busy light is flashing), just a black screen. I tried putting in the floppy I created, it says:
invalid compressed format (err=)
Can anyone help me recover it?

Also if recovery is possible, I'd like to know how to get to the questions it asks when installing, such as packages, time zone, etc?

Thank you very much.
