The performance for RAID 1 is not an issue. Linux software RAID is
pretty darn good, and RAID 1 is not very taxing for the CPU. The
complexity is more of a concern. You have to be quite confident in your
abilities to handle a disk failure properly. For my single server, I
don't feel I get enough use with the RAID utilities to confidently
restore my data, even though I've done a trial run before. If I were
maintaining a dozen servers that might be a different story. So I'll be
changing over to hardware RAID 1 with the 3Ware 7000 card already
mentioned in another month or so - just haven't had time to do it yet.
