Yes, but you don't have to log out and log back in and you're less
inclined to remain logged in as root when you just fall back to a
normal user.

Ever hear of trojans? They're not impossible in Unix, just uncommon
because people don't just log in and do stuff as root, thus limiting
damage to just one user.
Don't log in as root. The ass it saves may be your own. 8:o)
