Custom Kernel - Tux Boot-Time Logo Vanished Horror :)

Mah Fello Tuxians,

I've been using the bf24 kernel ever since I installed Woody, but I've 
just compiled my first custom kernel, and although the resulting kernel 
runs ok, I was distressed (shocked even ;-) to find I no longer get a 
cheery Tux logo in the top left-hand corner of the screen as Linux 
boots.  How do I get it back ?

I've done some hunting, and found the "Linux Kernel Logo Patch Project" 
site at http://www.arnor.net/linuxlogo/, where there is the statement :

   "When using a framebuffer console, the Linux kernel 
   displays a small penguin logo on the screen at boot time"

(The project itself appears to be more concerned with fiddling with or 
suppressing the logo, but implies that the base logo feature is built 
in to modern kernels.)

"Aha", I thought, "perhaps I didn't request a framebuffer console in the 
kernel config".  But I've looked and looked - and can't find anywhere 
in "make menuconfig" where a framebuffer console is even mentioned.

Can anyone help me out here ?
