But it only happens about once a month or so, so it's okay. Just keep on
using it.

AFAICT, mutt can't do this ... yet.  Try dropping the attached patch in
your debian/patches. Or get the package I just built at

It hasn't been tested except by me.  Give it a whirl.  If it flies, we
can see if the mutt developers (and/or the debian package maintainer)
would be interested in including it.
