It's clear you're frustrated, but it's not clear exactly what your problem/setup is.I have a problem with debian3 and that is, that I want a desktop environment where USB keyboard & mouse, soundblaster Live, Geforce3 hardware acceleration all work And doing this seems to be a mission. especially USB keyboard & mouse. the install kernel is lame and changing kernels and insterting the right modules seems to always end up with me being able to get into X, which I wish it didn't, but then not having keyboard or mouse input so ? linux finds the USB devices but doesn't use them this is weird to me. ?
What kernel version are you using? It sounds like you're saying that you boot off of a 2.2.x kernel, and then switch to another after each boot, which doesn't make sense.
If you don't boot into X, does your keyboard work? Does the capslock activate the capslock light? Does Ctrl-Alt-F2 switch to the second vt? Does the mouse if you don't boot into X? Are you running gpm? If so, what's the configuration as found in /etc/gpm.conf? What's the mouse section look like in /etc/X11/XF86Config?
