thanks for the tip, Cam.  When I entered that file there seemed to be a screen configured.  I checked the paramaters and they seemed ok.  The error message I get is (still):
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
Fatal server error:
no screens found
then it says...
X connection to 0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

Thanks again for any further assistance anyone can offer.
